By 1664, James Barnaby, Jr. entered Somerset County, Maryland from Northhampton County, Virginia for on 12 March 1663/64 he patented "Barnaby's Lott" (200 acres) at Manokin. In his will, signed 26 January 1665/66 (probated 28 May 1667) he made bequests to wife Mary (executrix), her dower rights; to son James, 200 acres (according to Patent); and to daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth Barnaby, the latter to have personal property bequeathed her by her god-father, Col. William Kendall. In the event of the deaths of his wife and children without issue, his estate was to pass to John Whitehead, Jr., of Northampton County, Virginia. (Ann. Wills box 1, folder 3). Mary Barnaby was listed as relict of James Barnaby 1 April 1666. Archives of Maryland, Vol. LIV. On 28 January 1667/68 banns for the marriage of Mary Barnabe, widow, to Henry Miles were published, but she married Edward Jones on 1 April 1669 (by John Winder, JP of Manokin). She died that same year. Her sixteen year old son James Barnaby was evidently killed in an accidental shooting by Mercy Fountaine on the Edward Jones property on 3 March 1681. At a Somerset County Court on 18 Aug 1671, John Avery entered a complaint against Edward Jones to recover Mrs. Avery's fee for having instructed the children of Mrs. Barnabe. "That your peticioners wife made a bargain with Mary Barnabe to school her children one summer and for consideracon your peticioner was to have one two-year old heifer . . . [left] at the house of the said Barnabe until she had a calfe." The court ordered Jones to deliver the heifer, "appointed him by the widowe Barnaby deceased, with her increase" (Torrence, p. 287).
