Excepts from the Eckes Family History compiled by William Harold Eckes in 1984: "All known Eckes lived in the Rhine Valley of Germany in the towns of Sommerloch, Wallhausen, Bingen and Mainz. These towns are all close together, so there are probably some other Eckes's in other nearby towns in the Rhine Valley". "Our branch of the family came from Bingen on the Rhine."

From a letter written by Mary Catherine's granddaughter Elizabeth - "Grandpa Eckes came from Germany when he was 17 years old (1826?). Grandma Jacobeth (Catherine) Eckes came from Germany when she was 10 years old. They grew up and met in the United States."

Eleven years later he added a 23 acre parcel of land. Jacobus sold his farm on October 11, 1877 to M.V.
