My grandfather Henderson was born in 1881 near Pocomoke City on the Eastern Shore, a descendent of the Henderson family that had been living along the Pocomoke River since the mid seventeenth century.
James Henderson (born circa 1630 and died by 22 October 1692) was evidently the original immigrant from Scotland to America of this family . He acquired land in Accomack County, Virginia in the early 1660's and his son John Henderson (Sr.) was born on 12 May 1661. James Henderson later settled on Pitt's Creek in what is now Worcester County and for a number of generations the early Henderson's were "planters" on several plantations in the vicinity.
Charles Henderson, a son of John Henderson Sr, was the father of Levin Henderson, a ship wright, and made a bequest to his grandson Curtis (the son of Levin) in his last will and testament. This information was the "missing link" that confirmed my Henderson family lineage. Curtis Henderson was the father of John Henderson who married Elizabeth Houston. John Henderson, born abt 1805, is shown in various census listings as being a school teacher, a farmer and in late life, a retail clerk. His son Julius Henderson was my great grandfather.
